Konavle: villages, mills and the Sokol Grad fortress
Konavle is the long valley at the southern end of Croatia, between the sea cliffs and the mountains on the border. Most visitors only see it through the window on the way from the airport. Behind the main road it is farmland, stone villages and very little traffic.
This day takes the back roads from Cavtat to Sokol Grad, with lunch by the water in between.

Sokol Grad
Čilipi
The plan for the day
Čilipi
The main village of the valley. On summer Sundays local groups dance in front of the church in the traditional Konavle costume.
Ljuta
A short river that springs from the hillside and once powered a row of mills. Some of the old mill houses are now restaurants with tables over the water.
Sokol Grad
A medieval fortress built into a rock above the valley, once guarding the old border. Inside is a small exhibition, and from the walls you see the whole of Konavle.
Good to know
Sokol Grad has steps and uneven stone, so wear comfortable shoes. The ticket and lunch are paid on the spot.
